Slackro Fest 2008

Taking yoga off the mat in the name of mindfulness, Slacro Fest is the first official merging of yoga slacklining and AcroYoga in the
setting of Williamsburg Brooklyn at McCarren Park (L train to Bedford or L / G to Lorimer stop). Join NYC yoga slackers and local
AcroYoga teachers and experience the yoga practice in an entirely new setting while supporting a fundraiser to help raise awareness
and support children living in extreme poverty in Cambodia. Check out products from our eco-conscious sponsors and learn about
simple ways that you can be more mindful in your daily life.
Come as you are and feel free to bring, friends, family members (especially kids) and pets. We will be located in the park near the baseball
diamonds by the farmer’s market (towards the corner of Driggs and Lorimer). Please bring some food to share and anything else
you like to do outdoors. Rain date on June 7th please check www.adicarter.com for more details
The Mindfulness Challenge- Based on the karmic management teachings shared by Geshe Michael Roach in The Diamond Cutter: The Buddha on Strategies for
Managing Your Business and Your Life, the Mindfulness Challenge is a project designed to raise awareness and funding for the Cambodian Children's Fund while
educating individuals about simple things that they can do to be more present in their daily lives. The goal is to raise $20,000 by the end of 2008 and produce a paper
mandala of the responses to the question: what’s one little thing that you do in your daily life that’s mindful, that reminds you to be present, and that you would love for
more of your friends to do? more details at (www.adicarter.com/mindfulnesschallenge)

Lina Foot Surgery (head surgon Jason P Magness)

Three days after I met Lina I was holding a light on her foot with one hand and holding her down with the rest of my body.

Lina had just got back from Baja where she competed with Jason Magness and Daniel Staudigel on team YogaSlackers in the Baja Travesia they ended up crossing the finish line in 2nd place. Not bad considering she just met these two crazy guys 5 days earlier. I was not there so I will let the team explain more of the race.

I flew in to help out with the slacklining and Acro workshop Jason was hosting at Yoganic's. So the race ended on the 28th the workshop began on the 29th, thankfully he had Dieke Bikker as an assistant. We spent the first 2 hours learning acrobatic counter balances

The last half of the class we move outside to trolley park for a bit (3 hours) of slacklining in which Lina participated in case you were not keeping track.

The next day everyone was back for 5 more hours of Acro and slacking. Now that you have a concept of what Lina did for the three days after I met her this might mean a little more.

I wish I had close ups of the surgical tools!
Slackers need tough FEET for their Feats.

108 Slackline Salutations for Peace

On April 19th, the day of the Equinox, nearly 100 yogis arose early to meet at Himmel Park in Tucson, AZ. Their mission - to complete 108 sun salutations for world peace. The event was organized by local Ashtangi extraordinaire, Lisa Schremp.  I (Jason) was asked to attend and do 108 Slack-line salutations.  And so I did.
All in all, it took about 90 minutes to complete. and I was able to stay on the line without falling for the firs 36 salutations (about 20+ minutes).  My salutations began simply, just walking forward and backward, then progressing to sitting, doing poses seated, standing, kneeling and a few side planks (vasistasana)  for good measure.  It has been a long time since I felt so relaxed and focused on the line.  Perhaps it was the energy from all the beautiful yogis practicing next to me.
In the end I'd done nearly 108 asana's (54 on each side - although some were not distinct asana but variations), 108 breaths in lotus (padmasana), 108 breaths standing in stillness, 108 breaths on my knees in the "robot prayer" variations, 108 breaths in savasana.   I also spent a bit of time in inversions on the line (the dutchie special).  In all I only fell off the line 6 times.
During the middle of my session, I attempted to drink a mug of steaming chai on the line (while still doing some asana) but only made it halfway through before I was flung from the line and covered in hot tea!
The atmosphere was amazing and it was incredible to look out and see 80+ yogis practicing in unison.  Very inspiring.  Over the last 3 years, the event has raised over $30,000 for displaced Iraqi children.

A few hours later, I taught an AcroYoga/Slackline Yoga workshop, and we all ended up staying the park afterwards till dark.  I was certainly sore the next day!
